The name of the eldest hen my mother has been raising is Miracle.

 

Last year, my mother decided to raise hens in the corner of her garden. She had experience raising them and said they were pretty and friendly as dogs, and it was so wonderful getting healthy eggs every day. Getting chicks was not a difficult task. My brother-in-law picked seven chicks from his farm and had my nephew deliver them to us. I built a chicken coop in half a day on the same day the chicks arrived, using typical coop nets and metal pipes. My mother was happy to see the little chicks soon to be grown up and laying eggs. But raising chicks was not going smoothly. Not too long after, there was an attack by presumably stray dogs. There was a big torn hole in the net. Five chicks were left dead. Luckily, the two chicks escaped to the garden and were alive. My mother and I fixed the coop and covered up the bottom part so it would be hard for predators to tear the net. We thought this would protect the chicks even though it could not be perfect. My aunt said the coop looked empty and bought four chicks to fill it up, so six were living in it. For a while, chicks were growing well peacefully, but there was another attack by some animals that dug the ground. And this time again, only two survived. We felt heartbroken. My mother talked about giving up raising hens. But we fixed the coop once more and reinforced it this time. It looked sturdy, and we hoped there would be no more attacks. The surviving chicks grew well for some time, and one started laying eggs. But there was another attack. It was so heartbreaking. One of the chicks was left bitten to death outside the coop, and the other, hard to imagine how she survived, was putting her head down at the corner, looking still terrified by the attack with all the tale feathers gone.

 

As an architect, I have to build a real coop. I studied the habits of chickens, researched ways to design space for chickens to live happy lives, and searched for examples of well-designed and built chicken coops. The design of the new chicken coop was developed through consideration of numerous elements, and I was able to finish the construction thanks to the help of my uncle and his friend. My mother named the young hen survived three harsh attacks and got to live in the new coop, Miracle(Ki Jeok). The new miraculous space for survived Miracle was complete. She looked so happy when moving into the new home. I felt sorry for Miracle that I failed to protect her from three brushes with death while satisfied by completing the worry-free coop. To meet the capacity of the new space, my mother bought five chicks from the farm my aunt went to last time to make a new family for Miracle(Ki Jeok) and named each of them. Ki Young, Ki Min, Ki Soon, Ki Seok, Ki Dae.

 

Through designing and building the coop, I reaccessed the human-centered perception that architecture is an activity only for living and habitation of human beings. And I realized that, in architecture, fundamental opportunity and genuine intent are more important than professional knowledge and technique. More than two millennia ago, Roman architect Vitruvius wrote that the three elements that good architecture must have were stability, utility, and beauty in The Ten Books on Architecture, and this has been considered the truth until today. However, beyond fulfilling these principles, this experience of designing and building the coop offered me a chance to reaffirm that architecture can create new life values and play an important role in searching for meaning in life.

 

Also, I realize once more that, while so accustomed to the things we enjoy, we often forget how lucky we are and how miraculous it is to have an ordinary day staying healthy and safe, and we need to be always grateful for that. And finally, gratitude attracts miracles.

어머니가 키우는 닭들 중 가장 나이가 많은 닭의 이름은 ‘기적’이다.

 

지난해 어머니는 텃밭 한구석에 닭을 키우기로 마음먹으셨다. 예전에도 몇 마리 키워 봤는데 애완견 못지않게 사람을 따르는 닭들이 너무 예쁘고 거의 매일 낳아 주는 알을 받는 재미가 너무 좋다 하셨다. 병아리를 구하는 건 어렵지 않았다. 매형이 농장에서 일곱 마리를 조카를 시켜 보내주셨다. 닭장은 병아리가 오기로 한 날 일반적인 닭장 망과 비닐하우스 파이프를 활용해 한나절 만에 지어졌다. 어머니는 곧 자라나서 알을 낳아줄 병아리들을 보며 흐뭇해하셨다. 하지만 키우는 일은 순탄치 않았다. 얼마 지나지 않아 들개로 추정되는 야생 동물의 습격이 있었다. 닭장 망에 큰 구멍이 나 있었고 다섯 마리가 물려 죽었다. 다행히도 텃밭으로 도망쳐 숨어있던 두 마리의 병아리는 살아남았다. 어머니와 나는 닭장을 보수하고 천적들이 망을 뚫기 어렵게 아랫부분을 보온 덮개로 둘러 덮어 주었고, 완벽하진 않지만, 병아리들을 보호할 수 있을 거로 생각했다. 이모는 닭장 안이 썰렁하다며 병아리 네 마리를 새로 사다 닭장을 채워주었고, 다시 여섯 마리의 병아리들이 닭장 안에 살게 되었다. 한동안 병아리들은 평화롭게 잘 자랐다. 하지만 땅을 파고들어 온 동물의 또 한 차례의 습격이 있었고 이번에도 두 마리만 살아남았다. 어머니는 닭을 키우는 것을 포기할까도 생각하셨지만, 닭장은 다시 한번 보수 되었고 이번엔 보강 작업도 했다. 작업 후 닭장은 꽤 튼튼해 보였고, 우리는 더 이상의 습격이 없기를 바랐다. 한동안 남은 두 마리 병아리들은 잘 자랐고 한 마리는 알도 낳기 시작했다. 하지만 결국 또 한 번의 습격이 있었다. 마지막 습격은 너무나 가슴 아팠다. 결국 남은 두 마리중 한 마리는 닭장 밖에 죽어 있었고 어떻게 살아남았는지 모르지만 생존한 한 마리는 꼬리 부분의 털이 다 뜯겨나간 채로 아직도 습격의 공포에서 벗어나지 못한 듯 엉망이 된 닭장 구석에 머리를 푹 숙이고 있었다.

 

건축가인 나는 닭장을 제대로 지어야 했다. 닭들의 습성에 관해 공부하고 어떻게 디자인해야 닭들이 행복한 삶을 살 수 있는지에 대한 조사도 하고 잘 지어진 닭장 사례들도 찾아보았다. 여러 요소를 고려해 새로운 닭장 디자인이 구상, 발전되었고, 새 닭장은 이모부와 친구분의 도움을 받아 지어졌다. 어머니는 마지막으로 살아남아 새 닭장에 살게 된 어린 닭에게 이름을 지어주셨다, 기적이. 세 차례의 습격을 거치고 살아남은 기적이의 기적 같은 집이 완성됐다. 닭장을 짖는 동안 임시 거처에 있던 기적이는 새 집을 너무나 반기고 좋아하는 모습이 역력했다. 나로선 더 이상 습격을 걱정하지 않아도 되는 닭장을 완성한 뿌듯한 마음만큼이나 기적이에게 좋은 집을 지어주지 못해 세 차례나 죽을 고비를 넘기게 한 사실에 미안한 마음이 컸다. 그리고 어머니는 이모가 병아리를 사 왔던 곳에 가서 계획한 닭장 규모에 맞게 다섯 마리의 병아리를 사서 기적이에게 새 식구를 만들어 주었고, 새로 온 다섯 마리 모두 이름을 지어 주었다. 기영이, 기민이, 기순이, 기석이, 기대.

 

닭장을 디자인하고 짓는 과정을 통해 건축이 사람의 거주와 생활만을 위한 행위라는 인간 중심적인 생각을 되짚어 보게 되었고, 건축 행위에 있어 전문적 지식과 기술보다 더 중요한 것은 그 행위의 진실한 동기와 의도라는 생각이 들었다. 이천여 년 전 로마의 건축가 비트르비우스는 건축십서에 잘 디자인된 건물이 갖춰야 할 세 가지 요소를 내구성, 유용성, 아름다움이라 저술했고 이는 지금도 지극히 당연히 여겨지고 있다. 하지만 건축은 이 세 가지 요소를 충족시키는 것을 넘어서 삶의 새로운 가치를 만들어 낼 수 있으며, 우리가 각자의 삶의 의미를 찾아 나아가는 데 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다는 것을 새삼 깨닫는 경험이었다.

 

또한 우리는 누리고 있는 것들에 너무 익숙해진 나머지 우리의 무탈하고 평범한 일상이 얼마나 특별한 행운이며 기적 같은 일인지를, 그리고 이에 무한이 감사해야 함을 때로는 잊고 살고 있다는 사실을 다시 한번 깨닫는 계기가 되었다. 결국 감사하는 마음이 기적을 만든다.
